From WebMD (12/11):
Bumetanide, an FDA-approved diuretic drug, improved the symptoms of
children diagnosed with autism, reducing their average autism scores
from severe to mild or moderate, French
researchers found. "Bumetanide is an interesting and promising
medication," says Dr. Andrew Adesman of Cohen Children's Medical Center
in New Hyde Park, N.Y., who was not involved in the study. Although the
medication is on the market and appears to be safe, he urged doctors and
families to wait for more research before using it. The findings, based
on 60 3- to 11-year-olds with autism, appear in the journal
Translational Psychiatry.
