Getting enough sleep may help youths boost their vocabulary

From MedicalDaily.com (1/3):

Children who got enough sleep were able to learn and retain new words more quickly than those who didn't sleep well, according to a study published in the journal Developmental Science. Researchers found that both sleep disturbance and snoring among children were linked to increased risks of learning and behavioral problems.

Modified Atkins diet leads to fewer epilepsy seizures, study says

From MedWire News (U.K.) (1/3):

Patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy who followed a modified Atkins diet for at least one month had fewer seizures, Johns Hopkins research showed. The diet had lower carbohydrate limits than the original Atkins plan but was less restrictive and easier to manage than a ketogenic diet, researchers reported in the journal Epilepsy & Behavior.

Probiotics for the Prevention of Clostridium difficile - Associated Diarrhea (CDAD)

From Annals of Internal Medicine, Volume 157, Number 12, December 2012:

Antibiotic treatment may disturb the resistance of gastrointestinal flora to colonization. This may result in complications, the most serious of which is CDAD. Evidence suggests that probiotic prophylaxis results in a large reduction in CDAD without an increase in clinically important adverse events.

Generic drug benefits children with autism, small study finds

From WebMD (12/11):

Bumetanide, an FDA-approved diuretic drug, improved the symptoms of children diagnosed with autism, reducing their average autism scores from severe to mild or moderate, French researchers found. "Bumetanide is an interesting and promising medication," says Dr. Andrew Adesman of Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park, N.Y., who was not involved in the study. Although the medication is on the market and appears to be safe, he urged doctors and families to wait for more research before using it. The findings, based on 60 3- to 11-year-olds with autism, appear in the journal Translational Psychiatry.

Mercury and developmental disabilities

If mercury plays any role in developmental disabilities, the rate of disability should relate to any reliable direct measure of contamination. The current research focuses on one index of environmental mercury contamination. Specifically, mercury-related fish advisories are found to be a surprisingly strong predictor of a state’s autism rate, r = 0.48, p < 0.001. The relationship remains strong after controlling for student to teacher ratio and per pupil spending.
